Silver King Lodge, located in Barra del Colorado on Costa Rica's northeastern Caribbean coast, is renowned for its exceptional tarpon fishing. Situated approximately 230 kilometers from San José, the lodge is nestled within the Barra del Colorado Wildlife Refuge, the country's second-largest rainforest preserve, encompassing 230,000 acres of tropical forest, fluvial islands, channels, and swamplands.

The lodge offers unparalleled access to both resident and migratory tarpon populations, with fish often exceeding 100 pounds. Anglers can also target species such as snook, jack crevalle, and mackerel in the surrounding rivers, creeks, and lagoons. Guests are housed in spacious, air-conditioned rooms featuring two or three queen-size beds, walk-in closets, and en-suite bathrooms with hot water. The lodge boasts a swimming pool with an eight-foot waterfall, a 101-degree screened-in Jacuzzi, and a sauna. The on-site bar offers a selection of Costa Rican beers, rum, and house wines, while the restaurant serves buffet-style meals highlighting locally sourced ingredients.

The Fishing

Silver King Lodge employs experienced, English-speaking guides proficient in both spin and fly fishing techniques. The lodge provides top-quality spinning and casting tackle, with a limited supply of fly-fishing equipment available upon request. Their fleet includes 23-foot deep V-hull fiberglass boats equipped with marine radios and fish finders, as well as 16-foot aluminum skiffs for backwater fishing.

Beyond fishing, the lodge offers ecotourism experiences, including jungle cruises where guests may encounter iguanas, toucans, caimans, monkeys, and, less commonly, manatees, ocelots, and jaguars. The surrounding rainforest's rich biodiversity makes it a prime destination for nature enthusiasts.

Fishing Seasons:

  1. Tarpon Fishing:

    • Peak Season: September to November is considered the best time for tarpon fishing. During these months, tarpon migrate through the area in large numbers, providing exceptional opportunities for anglers.

    • Secondary Season: January to May offers good tarpon fishing as well, although the fish are less concentrated compared to the peak months.

  2. Snook Fishing:

    • Best Time: Snook fishing is typically best during the rainy season, particularly from May to November, when they are more active in the rivers and estuaries.

  3. Offshore Fishing (Tuna, Wahoo, Sailfish):

    • Optimal Period: March to May is ideal for offshore fishing excursions when these species are most abundant.

Itinerary: 

Day 1

Own arrangements to San Jose Costa Rica then onto Silver King Lodge (with assistance from our travel agent). Generally you will travel to Dallas Texas from Sydney, stay the night then fly to San Jose the following morning.

Day 2-3

Catch the regular commercial flight to Silver King Lodge

​

Day 4 > 8

Guided fishing days (as many as you like).

​

Day 9

Depart Silver King Lodge for your onward flights.

​

Silver King Lodge often books out the most popular dates two years in advance. 

Its worth getting in early to make your plans to fish the best Tarpon destination in the world.

Most popular times to travel are:

September- November- Best numbers of big migrating Tarpon.

​

November-December- Good time for numbers of smaller Tarpon in lagoons up river.

​

May-June- Less rain, cleaner water. Good for sight casting Tarpon at the mouth of the river.

​

Exact dates within this are flexible and also determined by flight schedules, extended and combination trips with Crocodile Bay Resort are welcome and more days fishing can be added.
