Papua New Guinea
THE ULTIMATE BLACK BASS FISHING ADVENTURE
Lake Murray is the largest lake in Papua New Guinea and home to an abundance of the prized black bass and barramundi
Interested in fishing the largest lake in Papua New Guinea? Lake Murray is located in the middle Fly District of the Western Province of PNG and covers around 650 square kilometres, but increases up to five times this size in the wet season. Lake Murray and the surrounding rivers have so far shown us that there is an untapped amount of the mighty PNG Black Bass with a bycatch of barramundi. It has a highly convoluted shoreline more than 2,000 km's long with numerous rivers leading into and out of the main lake. It’s been a source of nourishment for many of the local peoples. Indigenous tribes of around 5,000 people own the lake and the surrounding one million hectares of forest.

Along the rivers and around the edges of the lakes, including Lake Murray, are large tracts of grassland and savannah which are periodically inundated when the Strickland and Herbert Rivers flood their banks. These grasslands and swamps are home to an extraordinary variety of wildlife, including large numbers of fish including the PNG black bass. barramundi, saratoga and catfish can also be caught although not as prevalent as the bass.
Lake Murray Lodge is nestled amongst the trees on Boboa Island. There are 12 rooms with twin and double beds as well as a veranda overlooking the lake with views to die for!The main lodge has a wraparound veranda, with water views on three sides. The lodge contains a dining room, bar, lounge and reception area. In keeping with the eco-friendly philosophy the entire lodge operation is completely solar powered.
Villages can be visited during your stay where one can experience the unique culture of the Lake Murray area. This part of the Western Province is also home to over half of PNG's total bird population and Lake Murray itself is one of the best bird watching areas in the province.
At this point in time we have not encountered many Barramundi, however what we has been caught were nearly all over a metre! The more we get to fish the area we are sure we will find more Barramundi. When you see the locals with metre-plus Barra over their shoulders, the future prospects are promising.
All the fishing in the lake and surrounding rivers so far has been purely exploratory with great results and is open to different styles of fishing. The fishery is strictly catch and release. Because the wet season is from around mid-December to the end of March we intend to fish from May through to October and possibly resting the area the remainder of the year. Our exposure to the fishing so far has resulted in some very big fish up to 50 pounds being landed and many more dropped.
Boats of 5 metres in length have been custom built this unique environment. They fish 3 clients comfortably with guides and have 60 hp Yamaha 4 stroke motors which get clients to a wide range of fishing spots in a timely manner.
This is a BYO fishing gear trip, a comprehensive tackle list will be supplied to confirmed clients.
