Jurassic Lake

Argentina

Lago Strobel Lodge is a remote Patagonian estancia offering exclusive access to Jurassic Lake (Lago Strobel) — one of the most famous and productive rainbow trout fisheries on the planet.

Set on the isolated southern shoreline of the lake, the lodge places you in the heart of a wild, untouched landscape where enormous rainbow trout thrive. This is big-water fishing at its finest, supported by highly experienced guides, comfortable accommodation, and excellent cuisine — a rare combination in such a remote setting.

Jurassic Lake is the kind of place most anglers only dream about. Vast, windswept, and virtually untouched by human presence, it delivers the sort of fishing that feels almost unreal — aggressive wild rainbows, extraordinary numbers, and genuine trophy potential every day. It’s this isolation that has allowed the fishery to develop into what we consider one of the most prolific wild rainbow trout destinations in the world.

For anglers chasing truly big fish, exceptional guiding, and a once-in-a-lifetime fly-fishing adventure, Lago Strobel Lodge stands in a class of its own.

Getting There from Australia

To reach Jurassic Lake Lodge from Australia, most anglers fly into Buenos Aires, Argentina first, then connect on a domestic flight to El Calafate (FTE) — the gateway to Patagonia. El Calafate is well-served with daily flights from Buenos Aires and other Argentine cities, making the connection straightforward.

We recommend arriving in El Calafate the day before your scheduled lodge transfer so you’re rested and ready to head out the next morning. A lodge representative will pick you up at your El Calafate hotel and either take you on the scenic ground transfer (around 6–7 hours) or to the airport for the optional charter flight direct to a private airstrip just 15 minutes from the lodge.

The charter flight from El Calafate takes about one hour and is an excellent way to maximise your fishing time while enjoying breathtaking Patagonian views, but if you prefer to soak up the wild landscape by road, the ground transfer is included in your package.

The Lodge & Camp Experience

The camp at Lago Strobel has come a long way from its early days of dome tents and basic facilities. Today, anglers stay in a simple but well-built wooden lodge that provides genuine comfort in an otherwise remote environment. Hot showers, proper bathrooms, and warm communal spaces make it easy to settle in and focus on fishing for the week.

Located in the isolated Lake Strobel region of Santa Cruz Province, Estancia Laguna Verde is a classic Patagonian estancia — a working ranch house thoughtfully rebuilt into a practical and comfortable fishing lodge. Accommodation includes single- and double-occupancy rooms, all with private bathrooms, designed to give anglers space to rest and recharge after long days on the water.

The main living area overlooks Laguna Verde, a small lake holding healthy populations of rainbow and brown trout. This is the social hub of the lodge, featuring a full bar, satellite TV, and a fully stocked fly-tying desk for guest use. Power is available 24 hours a day via wind and backup generators, and a laundry service operates twice weekly.

Food & Hospitality

Hospitality is a highlight here. Expect generous, hearty Argentinean meals, including traditional asados (BBQs), Patagonian lamb, empanadas, and well-executed international dishes. All meals are complemented by quality Argentine wines from Mendoza and beyond, along with beer — all included as part of the experience.

Lunches are flexible, with the option to return to the lodge for a hot meal and short break, or enjoy a freshly prepared lunch served on the lakeshore while fishing with your guide.

Classic Patagonian style, solid comfort, excellent food, and a relaxed atmosphere — it’s exactly what you want in a remote fishery where the focus is on great fishing, good company, and being well looked after.

Remote Lodge, World-Class Fly Fishing

Lago Strobel Lodge is located deep in the remote Santa Cruz province of southern Argentina, offering exclusive access to Jurassic Lake — one of the most extraordinary rainbow trout fisheries in the world. Reaching the lodge is part of the adventure, and the reward is fishing in a place that feels truly cut off from the modern world.

The lodge is accessed via a 4–5 hour overland transfer from El Calafate, travelling by sturdy 4WD through classic Patagonian terrain. Once you arrive, you’ll understand why this fishery has remained so special — vast landscapes, minimal human presence, and trout cruising in crystal-clear water.

The Fishing

Fishing at Jurassic Lake (Lago Strobel) is a pure walk-and-wade experience, with all fishing done from the bank or while wading in crystal-clear water. This is one of the world’s most prolific wild rainbow trout fisheries, known for exceptional numbers of large fish and true trophy potential.

Fish here average 7–9lb, with 10–20lb rainbows caught regularly. Even the smaller fish are larger than most anglers will have experienced elsewhere.

How the Fishing Works

Guests enjoy exclusive access to the most productive water across the entire Lago Strobel watershed. Guiding is typically one guide to two anglers (some beats suit three), with single guiding available on request.

Fishing is done in morning or afternoon sessions, rotating daily to match conditions and provide variety throughout the week.

Core Fishing Areas

The main daily rotation focuses on the most consistent water, all located close to the lodge:

  • Right of the Mouth – Productive shoreline with steady action and big fish

  • Left of the Mouth – Where the Barrancoso River enters the lake, holding concentrations of large trout

  • Bay of Pigs – A reliable producer of trophy-class rainbows

  • Lower Barrancoso River – Outstanding sight-fishing in moving water, just a short walk from the lodge

Beyond the Rotation

In addition to the core beats, anglers can explore a wide range of additional water across the estancia, including:

  • Remote sections of the mid and upper Barrancoso River

  • Multiple sheltered and open bays of Strobel Lake

  • Moro Creek and surrounding lagoons, especially productive during higher water periods

Your guide will help choose the best water each day based on conditions and your preferences.

Gear & Conditions

All fishing is done while wading or from the bank. Floating lines are used most of the time, with sink-tips or poly leaders recommended in certain conditions. Access between beats is by 4WD, with fishing areas typically 5–30 minutes from the lodge.

Anglers are encouraged to bring their own gear, though loaner tackle and an on-site fly shop are available. Full gear recommendations are provided during trip planning.

Why Jurassic Lake

Jurassic Lake is remote, wild, and lightly pressured — and that’s exactly why it delivers such extraordinary fishing. With exclusive access, expert guides, and miles of private water, this is a destination where expectations are not just met, but regularly exceeded.

Spend a week here, and there’s a very real chance you’ll land the largest rainbow trout of your life.
