The Great Barrier Reef with Far North Sport Fishing

Thursday, April 28, 2016

I recently returned with a group of clients from a trip to the Great Barrier Reef off Port Douglas with Far North Sports Fishing by far one of the most polished mother-ship operations you'll ever come across. After arriving at the Port Douglas Marina we were greeted by Tony the owner of the company and he escorted us to our taxi to take us out to the mother-ship. The groups eyes lit up when we saw that our taxi was the brand new 4 million dollar game boat called Zulu. After a fun 2 hour steam we arrived at the mother-ship Blue Martini to be greeted by the crew with a smile and a cold drink. The accommodation on the Blue Martini is excellent with an upper and lower lounge area, another lounge inside the boat and plenty of room to relax. In no time at all Daniel our amazing chef had whipped just one of his truly amazing restaurant quality meals we had for the week while aboard along with some quality wines to wash it down. We thought if the fishing was as good as the food and accommodation this week will be incredible.

Over the week despite some windy conditions, the clients had some amazing fishing experiences landing thumping GT's on poppers, coral trout, spangled empire and red bass on light spin tackle, spanish mackerell and even had some amazing night sessions off the back of the mother-ship landing cracking spangled empire and the odd shark to test the drags. The highlight for me was hooking and landing a 20kg Yellow Fin Tuna on light spin tackle. Theres nothing like the adrenalin of hearing the drag scream and starting to see the base of the spool and chasing the fish down to land it.

Apart for the fishing the scenery in and around the Great Barrier Reef is truly something that needs to be seen to be believed, the coral colours and reef fish are insane and is something everyone should experience just once. If the weather permits snorkeling the reefs is another activity that clients can do.

The crew on the Blue Martini couldn't do enough to make our trip a memorable one and you could be easily mistaken for thinking this trip costs double the price it actually does as its truly one of the most cost effective trips for the experience and service you receive.
