Chris Errity On Lake Marray PNG

Friday, September 15, 2017

Chris Errity just returned from his 2nd trip to Lake Murray and again the place blew him away.
They caught large numbers of huge black bass and as a by catch a lazy 22 cracking barrra.

Lake Murray is going from strength to strength and we are now taking bookings for 2018 so with reports like this places won't last long. If you are interested please call or message Angling Adventures and we can arrange to have you in a picture like this next year.

Read his great report on his trip.

Well what can I say.
Black bass are awesome!
Just back from another trip to Lake Murray in PNG fishing with Grant Edwards and Trevor Edwards. The fishing was once again insane with the 3 of us landing 113 fish in 4.5 days fishing including 91 bass and 22 barra. Many more were lost.
The lake was flooded again after a massive wet season and only a little lower than when I fished there at the same time last year.
Once again trolling was the go as there was no run-off present. Grant trumped us all landing a magnificent 91cm bass on the first day and it was the first bass he had ever hooked! Obviously he set the bar too high as we could not beat that fantastic fish over the next 4 full days of fishing.
Trevor's best was a healthy 86cm specimen and my best was an 81cm caught casting a sinking Zerek Cavalla minnow.
My first and only black bass casting.
Once again the fishing was insane with many double hook ups experienced and plenty of monster bass lost. Needless to say we came back with much lighter tackle boxes!
The new Shimano Tranx 300's were paramount in our efforts to stop these marauding fish loaded up with 50lb Finns braid.
There were many barra caught also during this trip with the average size fish in the 80's. I landed the biggest at 98cm and weighing 30lb. However, it was quite amusing getting annoyed over the by-catch getting in the way of catching our target species.
Best lures by far were the 6m Rapala magnums and Classic Dr Evils. All of our lures were fitted with BKK raptor hooks and they performed extremely well under extreme pressure from these brutish fish.
Once again the lodge, the staff and the guides were second to none. In fact I am pretty keen to go back next year as I am sure that Lake Murray is the best place in PNG to target large numbers of monster sized black bass.
As I said last year do yourself a favour and contact Angling Adventures to organise the trip of a lifetime chasing these magnificent fish. I highly recommend the experience as a whole culturally and of course the fishing in such a picturesque and remote place.
